The UN Sucks for three reasons:

1. The huge conference that they have every year totally messes up my commute

2. Their tolerance of anti-semitism makes me nauseous

3. Their partisan support of Arab nations has been a constant theme in their politics

Since the United Nation’s inception in 1945, there has been controversy over their bias towards Palestine and Arabs. One of the first decisions of the UN was to create the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCP). This committee was set up in attempts to understand the problems in Palestine, and consequentially devise a solution. Since then, the UN has maintained a central role in this region supporting the Palestinian refugees after defining the State of Israel in 1948. The UN has sponsored many peace agreements and treaties in this area throughout the years.

In 1975, the UN’s General Assembly passed a Resolution (Resolution 3379 to be exact) that stated that zionism is a form of racism. Zionism, as you may or may not know, is the Jewish political movement in support of the State os Israel. Thankfully, this Resolution was revoked in 1991.

Since 1961, Israel has been barred from the UN’s Asia Regional Group. Finally in 2000 Israel was accepted into the Western Europe and Other Countries group… woot… :/

Although the UN doesn’t promote anti-semitism, it has been known that anti-semetic remarks have been tolerated and accepted during internal discussions. It is common knowledge amongst the politically savvy that there is disproportional criticism of Israel within the UN when compared to other Arab nations. Some argue that this constitues a new form of anti-semitism. I’ll be talking more about this new form of anti-semitism at another time.

But if you didn’t think the UN sucked before, I hope you realize that it sucks now. It has even been said that UN officials have fought in wars against the Israeli army! Crazy…

Israel needs some legitter support. I might just walk the ten blocks over to the UN and start banging on the front door and smack some sense into them… I’ll let you know how that goes.

I thought not.

France is home to the largest Jewish and largest Muslim communities in Western Europe. There is always hostility when these two groups live in proximity to one another, but with the recent war in Gaza, tensions have intensified.

The war in the Gaza was between Hamas and Israel. Hamas is one of the two main Palestinian political groups. Since June of 2007, it is been in control of the Gaza strip without lawful authority (this is called de facto control). Hamas recognizes the fact of Israel, but refuses to recognize its right to exist, and has been responsible for many of the deadliest suicide attacks to Israel.

Due to the war in the Gaza these past few weeks, tensions in France have increased between these two groups. Demonstrations, violence, and discrimination have arisen between the Arabs and Jews.

“Since the Gaza war began on Dec. 27, firebombs have been thrown at four synagogues in France, although the police say it is not certain that the culprits were Muslims. A Jewish student was attacked by youths of Arab origin in a Paris suburb, and two Muslim students were attacked outside their high school by pro-Israel assailants. Both Muslim and Jewish families said there had been an increase in intimidation and verbal abuse.

“Richard Prasquier, the head of the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions, said that at least 60 anti-Jewish acts had been committed since the fighting began, or five times the amount in a typical three-week period.” – Katrin Bennhold, NY Times

Tensions between Jews and Muslims are not new in this area. You might stop and think to yourself- why the fighting? Why has there always been conflict and anti-semitism in France? Other than the recent war, what brings about this altercation?

Well, from the Muslim perspective, they argue that it has nothing to do with Jews and the Jewish religion itself. They claim that they are fighting in defense of the Palestinians. According to them, the land of Israel should be Palestine. This is the root of all of the fighting over the Gaza Strip. Therefore, the Muslims feel that Palestine is a victim of Israel. They are trying to convey their arguments as solely political, and having nothing to do with religion or anti-semitism. However, when the discrimination occurs, the Muslims are using much of the same old anti-semitism convictions that portray the Jewish community as money-grubbing, manipulative and evil.

Thankfully, Israel and Hamas have come to a sustainable peace agreement. This will lessen the tensions for now, but history has proven that the hostility between the Muslim and Jewish people in France will always be there, and we need to be aware of it.
